Taren stood against the wall of the dinner theater watching Hamburger Harry, dressed in his medieval costume, his fiddle tucked up under his neck, and his feet shuffling in that odd clogging way of his. He always started off his part of the entertainment with a story that would have the audience in stitches. The man was a natural-born storyteller, and she could totally see him as an actual minstrel back in medieval times.

Her phone vibrated in her pocket, and she slipped out of the room. Her heart bounced when she saw Dax’s name on the screen.

“Hi, Dax,” she said as she headed for her office.

“Busy?”

“It’s a full house tonight, which is always good.” She walked into her office, closing the door behind her.

“Okay. I don’t want to bother you then.”

There was an edge to his voice she’d never heard before. “What’s wrong?”

“A lot. Sorry. I shouldn’t be bothering you with my problems.”

“Did something happen?”

“You could say that. Which is why I’m going to have to reschedule our date. I don’t want to, but… Listen, I don’t want to dump all this on you. Just know I’m sorry.”

She glanced at her watch. Tonight’s dinner and show wouldn’t be over for another hour, and she really should stay, but… “I was about to cut out of here for the evening. I could swing by for a little while if you need a sounding board.”

He sighed into the phone. “I’d like that, but are you sure? I don’t want to interfere with your job.”

“I’m sure. See you shortly.”

After telling Yvonne she was in charge for the rest of the evening, Taren drove to the farm. She tried not to put too much meaning in his calling her when he needed to talk. It had to be something to do with Caitlyn, and she’d hoped that by now things were improving between them.

As she drove along the valley’s main street, she decided the town looked like something out of a Hallmark Christmas movie. The people here went all out with white lights on the storefronts and the trees lining the road. Large silver bells hung from the power poles, and in the middle of town a massive Christmas tree with huge colorful balls and lights took center stage.

Taren had loved this time of the year, especially after she and Stewart were married. They’d been excited about celebrating Chloe’s second Christmas, especially since she would have a sense of what was going on. That joy had been stolen from her on a rainy night when the car with Stewart and Chloe in it had hydroplaned before wrapping around a tree.

Since then she’d spent the holidays with her mother and brothers, pretending to enjoy herself so that she didn’t drag her family into her sadness. This year they were coming to Lucas’s log home here in the valley for Christmas, and maybe it would be different this time. She wouldn’t be at home where she’d spent the holidays with her husband, where the memories were heavy in her heart.
